ONE of Australia's cricket selectors will be sacked this week, ending his input into the upcoming Ashes campaign.
Not far out from the announcement of Australia's squad for the first Ashes Test at the Gabba on November 25, one of the panel of selectors is effectively marking time.
Selection boss Andrew Hilditch and full-time selector Greg Chappell are safe, however one of David Boon, Jamie Cox or Merv Hughes will get their marching orders after a Cricket Australia board meeting in Melbourne on Friday.
Hilditch, contracted until the end of the World Cup on the subcontinent early next year, will play a major role in dismissing one of his selection colleagues when he makes a recommendation to the 14 Cricket Australia directors. The board will take Hilditch's advice but they are free to go their own way.
The need to sack one of the selectors has arisen because of Chappell's recent appointment as the country's first full-time selector, increasing the panel from four to five.
This summer's Ashes squad is one of the most important ever, especially with several players such as Hauritz, Mike Hussey and Marcus North going into the series with faltering form and under pressure for their spots.
And one of the men - Boon, Cox or Hughes - who has watched the Australian cricket team from close quarters more than anyone else during the past 18 months will not be on deck to make the big calls.
After yesterday announcing their Twenty20 squad for a game against Sri Lanka in Perth on Sunday, Australia's selectors will today name their squad for three one-day matches against Sri Lanka early next month.
