FORMER Australian wicketkeeper Rod Marsh yesterday backed Tim Paine to retain his Test spot in the first Ashes Test at the expense of Brad Haddin.

Paine, 25, has made a seamless move into the Test ranks, while Haddin only returned to play for NSW yesterday after recovering from an elbow injury.

"I think Tim, obviously playing in Test matches now, and also a few one-dayers, his keeping will come on in leaps and bounds. It happens that the more you're picked, the better you become."

Earlier on Friday, Marsh revealed his belief that Paine had edged ahead of his older rival Haddin leading into the highly-anticipated Ashes contest.

Chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch left India this week declaring Haddin was still the No. 1 choice.
But Haddin, who smashed a fluent 56 from 63 balls in the Blues' 72-run one-day loss to the Tigers at the SCG on Friday, was adamant he wasn't concerned by any talk about his place in the Test team.

"I'm not one of those people who sit awake at night hoping someone nicks it or doesn't get runs," he said.

"I spent all my career behind Gilly so those sorts of things haven't crossed my thoughts.

"I'm not worried about who's going well or who's not."
