NSW began their domestic season during the week, but coach Matthew Mott hasn't heard from MacGill in almost two months. Phone messages and emails from MacGill's grade team, Sydney University, remain unanswered.
So here's the question NSW cricket wants answered - does Stuart MacGill plan to play cricket this summer?
"That's not the plan at this stage,'' MacGill's manager Leo Karis said.
It's not exactly a straight answer from the man who turned the ball sideways on his way to 207 Test wickets.
But the leg-spinner had been left without a national or state contract. He had been signed up by Cricket Australia for 2008-09, but his sudden retirement made that null and void. NSW had already filled their maximum contracts.
"If he decides that he wants to keep playing for NSW, then we'll sit down and work it out,'' CA spokesman Peter Young said last week.
"Different people at the club have sent emails to Stuart and left messages on his phone saying, 'if you ever want a game of cricket we're here for you, we're not sure what your plans are','' Phelps said.
"We just let Stuart do his thing, we don't pressure him. We know he's busy away from cricket with his wine show and a few other business interests.''
