BANGALORE: Ricky Ponting asked his middle order to stand up and they delivered yesterday, looking set to post a big first-innings total against India.
Australia 285 for 5 (Ponting 77, Watson 57) v India for day 1 close.
Australian openers Shane Watson and Simon Katich hoisted their side to a trademark start, reaching 0-99 at lunch.
Shane Watson, who made 57 to get the innings off to a fluent start, reckoned North looked in fine form.
''I think most things were pretty good last week, we really tried to stay away from the result in the meetings, the result was hard for us to accept but there were so many good things we did during the game,'' Ponting said.
Ponting, practising what he preached, was at the helm of Australia's innings as his team reached 5-285 before bad light stopped play late in day one of the second Test in an electric atmosphere at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Marcus North, under immense pressure after a series of failures, proved his worth with an unbeaten 43 despite some nervous moments. He and Tim Paine (8 not out) will resume today.
"Marcus is looking very good and he started his innings very well," he said.
Before play Ponting presented debutant Peter George with his baggy green cap, after he was called up to replace injured Doug Bollinger.
