MIKE Hussey dismisses Test rankings

MIKE Hussey has dismissed the International Cricket Council's Test rankings system, saying Australia is a better team than the fifth place.

The batsman, who started his career when Australia stood alone atop the rankings table, has experienced the gloomy slide to the all-time low position but believes it is not ''a true reflection'' of the team's form.

''I don't think we're the fifth best team in the world, I don't think that's a true reflection of our team, we're definitely better than that,'' Hussey said.

"I don't read a hell of a lot of press, I don't watch the TV.

"But watching guys like Sachin Tendulkar play so well at 37, Steve Waugh played very well later in his career, Matthew Hayden played brilliantly, Justin Langer, there's so much evidence of players playing very well past 35. I take a lot of confidence out of that."

Hussey has made 280 runs at an average of 25 since his unbeaten 134 against Pakistan at the SCG in January.

His once-imperious Test average of 86-plus has dipped to 49.75.

"I feel, inside myself, like I'm playing well, particularly in the past three Tests," Hussey said.

Funnily enough, if the Test championship was introduced now Australia would not qualify as it will be contested by the top four sides. Fortunately it will be introduced in 2013, giving Australia time to climb back into the upper half of Test-playing nations.

Hussey said handling Ashes hype had become an issue.

"There are differing views, in the team," Hussey said.
