North backs Ponting

Marcus North has become the latest figure to back Test captain Ricky Ponting in response to calls for him to step down following the recent series loss in India.

And, while Warne has adamantly declared he never questioned Ponting's credentials as skipper, the criticism that's followed has prompted many current and former players to leap to their skipper's defence.

"I kind of laugh at it all," was North's frank response to Ponting critics on Wednesday.

"Playing in a lot of different teams over the last 10 years of my career I've never come across a captain as good as Ricky."

"It's a silly question to me."

North, though, was on the brink of being dropped from the national side after a quiet domestic summer last year.

"Certainly for me personally, he's been a fantastic support of me and certainly helped me in the last two years of my international career," North said.

"Obviously making runs gives anyone confidence but certainly making a hundred against India in those conditions gives me a lot of confidence coming back here for the games with WA," said North.

"It has been a little bit lean for the Test match but I felt in really good touch over there, even if I did miss out a few times in the other innings."

"The lead up game I got a hundred, so to have two hundreds on that tour gives me a lot of confidence coming into this summer to hopefully continue that form in the next three or four weeks with WA."
