NSW batsman Usman Khawaja helps his chances for an Ashes call-up after steadying NSW in the Sheffield Shield

In an online poll on the personnel changes that should be made to Australia's Test team, foxsports.com.au users voted for Khawaja to play in the first Ashes Test.

But the 23-year-old left-hander missed the opportunity to make another unforgettable score when he fell for 60 shortly after lunch on day one at the Gabba.

"It's a bit disappointing but I'm happy to get some sort of start for the team," said Khawaja, who scored 214 in the Shield opener against South Australia.

Swan removed Queensland's biggest nuisance Khawaja after the classy, 23-year-old left-hander looked to be in the form that earned him selection as a reserve batsman in Australia's Test series against Pakistan in England in July.

Steven Smith marked his selection in the Test squad with a half-century after Usman Khawaja's hundred set up New South Wales at the SCG.
