O'Brien steers SA to first-up win

SOUTH Australia injected fresh hope to its season of promise with a first-up win over New South Wales in the re-jigged Ryobi One-Day Cup competition at Adelaide Oval.

South Australia 9 for 232 (O'Brien 44*, Clark 4-51) beat New South Wales 199 (Maddinson 54, Putland 4-41) by 33 runs

Gary Putland Man of the Match award(four wickets).

Hot on the heels of their shock Twenty20 Champions League charge in South Africa, the Redbacks eased into the 2010/11 season with a cruising 33-run win over the talented Blues in the new 45-over, split-innings format.

SA stormed to 9/232 before rolling NSW for 199 in the 43rd over.

Aaron O'Brien was the saviour with the bat, cracking an unbeaten 44 from just 30 balls at the tail to boost a flat run rate, while suffocating bowling from quicks Ben Edmondson and Gary Putland gave the the Blues' run chase no oxygen.

Australia's first-choice Test wicketkeeper Brad Haddin made a disappointing return from his elbow injury, falling lbw to Gary Putland for a duck.

"It was vital for us. The Champions League was good but to be able to come here for the big stuff, the domestic season it was important we got off to a good start," he said.

"You can take a certain amount of confidence in when you play good cricket but we're playing a totally different format so back to a red bull and six hours in a day. So yeah you can take some confidence from playing some professional cricket but it's a totally different game," he said.
