The NODC, which replaces the Ford Ranger Cup, bears little resemblance to the old one-day format, with a host of new variables coming into play thanks to some innovative rule changes.
Modifications include having the bowling side take a new ball from each end, the elimination of power plays, an increased maximum of 12 overs per bowler, and most significantly the 45 overs per team will be made up from split innings of 20 and 25 overs.
Australian One Day International veteran James Hopes takes over the reigns as captain, replacing Chris Simpson who stood down just weeks ago after two successful years in the role.
And while much of Queensland's success over the last few years has been brought about by the consistency, depth and hard work of an underrated fast-bowling contingent, on Wednesday, Hopes will be without injured front-liners Ben Cutting, Ryan Harris and Scott Walter.
While the visitors have selected a squad of thirteen with one man yet to be omitted, the season-opening clash will almost certainly see big-name recruit Mark Cosgrove make his debut in Tasmanian colours.
Also hoping to join Cosgrove in their One-Day debut for Tasmania will be classy middle-order batsman Alex Doolan and pint-sized opener Jonathan Wells.
Similar to the Bulls, Tasmania will be desperate for their top order to fire with the willow, confident in a strong domestic-level bowling attack that includes fringe internationals, Jason Krejza and Brett Geeves.
Match points will include one point for a first innings lead which is retained even if the side leading then eventually loses, and four points for a win, with five points if a team leads at the first innings and subsequently wins.
