TWO centuries in six days failed to stop opener Liam Davis being axed from Western Australia's Sheffield Shield team.

Davis plundered consecutive one-day centuries for the Warriors from October 17, but has been dumped from WA's side to play South Australia in a Shield match starting on Friday at Adelaide Oval.

Davis played in WA's season-opening Shield loss but has been squeezed out of a 13-man WA squad bolstered by four returning internationals.

"It makes things a little bit tough, especially with the batting order, because all the guys that have been playing have been playing very well, they have been scoring runs," North said.

SA summoned their fringe Australian players - strokemaker Callum Ferguson and quick Peter George - as both states seek their first Shield points of the season.
Ferguson admitted his side will need a good start against some 'quality international' opposition to stand any chance of winning.

"It's going to be a hotly-contested match this one, it's going to be a huge challenge for our blokes, they have got some international quality out there so we are going to have to be at our very best," he said.

"It's such a huge series and everyone would love to be involved in an Ashes series, but the Australian team is such a tough one to crack into," Ferguson said.

"I'm no different to anyone else getting around in the domestic competition, I want to make as many runs as I can in the lead-in to the Ashes just in the hope that you might get a start."
