Gilchrist appeared in four Ashes campaigns – including two on home soil – and twice reached 26 dismissals in a series – in England in 2001 and the domineering home series of 2006-2007. In all against England, he took 87 catches and had seven stumpings in just 20 matches.
Glenn McGrath, Brett Lee and Stuart Clark were all masters of the knick, and in their prime in 2006-2007.
Amazingly, Gilchrist didn't take a catch off Warne's bowling in that series, although he did pick up two stumpings, including the vital wicket of Collingwood for 96 in the first Test in Brisbane.
It all started with four catches in the 277-run win in Brisbane. He backed it up in the amazing six-wicket second Test success in Adelaide with another four.
The nine dismissals for the match represented a Test-career high against England for Gilchrist and was only one behind the 10 dismissals he grabbed against New Zealand in 2000. England's Jack Russell holds the record at 11.
Gilchrist, who took 379 catches and had 37 stumpings in his 96-Test career, was simply maintaining a tradition started by Marsh and continued by Healy.
Healy, arguably one of the most accomplished keepers of spin Australia has produced, followed by setting a mark of 27 dismissals in the home series of 1994-1995, keeping to such luminaries as McGrath, Warne Craig McDermott and Tim May.
Then came Gilchrist.
The stage is now set for Brad Haddin.
