Australia has won its first Hong Kong Sixes trophy in smashing style overnight, defeating Pakistan in the final on Sunday by two wickets after needing a seemingly impossible 46 of the final eight-ball over.
The squad, coached by Cricket Australia Centre of Excellence senior coach and former international player John Davison, fought back well to win the final after losing their opening round match to South Africa on Saturday afternoon.
Chasing Pakistan’s total of 6-132, Australia – captained by David Warner – smashed 48 runs from the final eight-ball over from Imran Nazir to seal the win.
After the match, Warner said he was ecstatic with the win and the way the team never said die in any situation, even in the seemingly impossible.
“It was amazing. We have that Australian passion when things are against us. It is one of those things – we needed 46 in that last over, but it is cricket and we knew we were always a chance if we backed ourselves,” Warner said.
But the gallant Aussies never said die with Warner (35 off 11), Glenn Maxwell (34 off 15) and Ryan Carters (31 off eight) disposing of the quality Pakistan attack.
To top off a great series, Glenn Maxwell was named player of the tournament winning the Ben Hollioake Trophy.
The Australian squad competing was:
David Warner - NSW (24)
Tim Armstrong - NSW (20)
Ryan Carters - VIC (20)
Mark Cleary - VIC (30)
Matthew Johnston - WA (24)
Glenn Maxwell - VIC (21)
Will Sheridan - VIC (23)
John Davison (Coach/Manager)
NB: Daniel Christian and Tom Cooper, who were selected in the original squad were unavailable and replaced by David Warner and Mark Cleary.
The Hong Kong International Cricket sixes tournament has been held since 1992.
