Australia opener Simon Katich in race to be fit for first Ashes Test against England

Simon Katich says his injured thumb is 'pretty close' to 100 percent but admits time is running out to convince selectors he is ready for the first Ashes Test in Brisbane on November 25.

The veteran opener suffered a fracture and ligament damage to his left thumb during a tour match in India last month.

Despite the extent of the injury the 35-year-old played in both Tests after initial scans failed to detect any serious damage.

"I will be starting on Saturday in club cricket and then playing next week," Katich said. "It's getting close, it's a lot better than it was but we decided to give it a bit longer.

"The idea is to get it right so I don't carry it through the whole summer, so we decided to be more cautious."

"It's not 100 percent yet but it's not far away, so I'm confident I'll be able to get through club cricket on the weekend and then play the Shield game next week."

"I'm positive that I'll be playing club cricket on the weekend and then play the Shield (match against Tasmania) next week."

"I'm fine mate, I'm 100 percent I feel good," Bollinger enthused.

"I've been bowling for a few weeks now so I should be right to go."

Bollinger also hopes to return to club cricket this weekend before joining Katich in the Blues line-up to take on Tasmania at the SCG starting next Wednesday.

"It is not in my best interest to only have one game before the Ashes," Katich admitted. "However, I played two Tests with the injury and I know what it is like if it is not right."
