Hauritz is Australia's No.1 spinner: Warne

Shane Warne has raised his very prominent flag in the camp of Nathan Hauritz, declaring him Australia's No.1 spinner and deserving of a spot in the team for the first Ashes Test in Brisbane.

As Hauritz and his newest rival Xavier Doherty prepared to cross paths if not swords in the Sheffield Shield fixture between NSW and Tasmania at the SCG starting on Wednesday, Warne said the incumbent's Test figures in Australia demanded he be given the first chance against England.

"I think Nathan Hauritz is the No.1 spinner, he's got a very good record in Australia and I'm sure he'll get given the first chance, he deserves that," Warne said on Tuesday.

"But if he doesn't do well, someone like Doherty is pushing and Steve Smith is pushing, so there's options and I think that's a good sign for Australian cricket."

"I think the 17-man squad is actually quite good, because it says 'look, you 17 guys at some stage through the summer or in the near future, are going to make up the Australian cricket team'," Warne said.

"So if you play well you'll probably get a chance to play in the first Test, if you don't then these guys are kicking at your heels and are going to give you a chance to push you out if your form's not good or you retire, then these guys are coming in.

"It's a lot closer than a lot of people think I reckon," said White.

"I think Xavier's in for a really good chance to play in the first Test if they do decide to play a spinner, which I understand they do."
