Michael Clarke delayed his entry to No.8 due to a painful back injury but he and Brad Haddin were able to save a limping New South Wales from a home defeat to Victoria. Clarke didn't intend on batting unless the Blues were closing on victory, but at 6 for 162 he took a risk and didn't come back until reaching the safety of stumps almost two hours later.
New South Wales captain Stuart Clark suggested that, despite his obvious discomfort, Clarke's injury was not as bad as it may have appeared. "His back's nowhere near as bad as people probably want to think," said Clark.
Tasmania v Queensland, Sheffield Shield, Hobart, 4th day
Queensland 254 & 8 for 214 (Carseldine 68*, Townsend 58) beat Tasmania 196 & 271 by 8 wickets
Queensland won by 8 wickets
Half-centuries to Lee Carseldine and Wade Townsend guided Queensland to their first win of the Sheffield Shield season. The eight-wicket victory came as the Bulls overhauled Tasmania's target of 214 and allowed them to forget their batting horrors of the previous game, when they were dismissed for 75 and 96.
Australian captain Ricky Ponting could only manage scores five and 32 in his first Shield match for three years.
