Mike Hussey plays straight on life

MIKE Hussey went a couple of months without reaching for a cricket bat this winter, which ordinarily would require some kind of intervention.

But the famously focused batsman, who will make it one of his ambitions to learn to chill out over the hectic next 18 months, was dealing with different stresses, which made it more difficult than usual to say goodbye to his family when Australia's cricketers boarded a plane for South Africa last week.

Fourteen weeks ago, Hussey's wife, Amy, gave birth to a baby daughter, Molly. She was three months premature and tiny. As he darted to and from the Perth hospital, looking after their two other children, Jasmin and William, and worrying about the health of Amy and Molly, cricket was a long way from Hussey's mind.

"I guess all you can do is take it one tour at a time and, what I really want to do is, when I do get a week here, or even a few days there, is really embrace that time, lock the cricket gear away and really not even think about training or playing.

"I want to entirely spend that time with my family and not even think about sponsor's appearances or anything like that."
