Hauritz is on the verge of being dropped for left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty.
He cast a disconsolate figure leaving the SCG, after a meeting with Hilditch, Ponting and Australia vice-captain Michael Clarke, giving the impression he had already received the news.
Ponting will be asked by Hilditch which spinner he wants for the Gabba Test starting on Thursday.
With Ponting's captaincy hanging on the Ashes, the selectors will give him the casting vote in line-ball decisions this summer.
Australia have dumped spinner Nathan Hauritz and named uncapped left-arm orthodox bowler Xavier Doherty in a trimmed 13-man Ashes squad for next Thursday's first Test against England in Brisbane.
Katich said he was impressed by Doherty.
"Yeah, you'd have to be, he knocked me over," he said.
"He did a good job for them, the way the wicket was. The pitch suited our quicks and they did a great job getting us back in the game and that's why, unfortunately, Hauri didn't get an opportunity.
"This game was about us getting six points. It wasn't about any individuals."
Leaving the SCG, Ponting denied he had spoken to Hauritz.
Australia's greatest spinner, Shane Warne, again urged the selectors to stick with Hauritz, and said if they replaced him, it would be "really disappointing".
"I think the selectors have probably missed a trick, because Nathan Hauritz is the No.1 spinner and he deserves first chance at it," Warne said.
