Shield showdown to test Hauritz

NATHAN Hauritz was not trusted by selectors to get the job done in the last Ashes match and now, after 18 months of being the No. 1 choice, they still remain unconvinced.

Selectors have chosen two other spinners alongside Hauritz in a bulging 17-man Australian squad named yesterday - 12 days before the first Test against England at the Gabba - for apparently little other reason than to create publicity for a series that has not yet captured the public interest of the blockbuster of four years ago.

Michael Hussey is under pressure, with Usman Khawaja and Callum Ferguson brought in as alternatives. ''They're a real chance to come in if we make a decision we need to change the side,'' Hilditch said. ''But you don't change the side unless you can make it better.''

''I think in India I got stuck doing one thing, I sort of forgot what I used to do.''

Hauritz is not counting on Ponting offering any advice during the shield game.

''Hopefully I get him out pretty early so he doesn't have to,'' he said.

''I don't think he'll be saying anything. I'm looking forward to it actually.''

Chairman of selectors Hilditch said Doherty was in the squad because his panel was undecided on whether a left-armer would be more suited on the Gabba pitch, against a batting line-up featuring four right-handers in the top six.

Hauritz has rejected the idea of a showdown with Doherty.
