Smith, who was overlooked for the India series after making his Test debut against Pakistan in July, gets his chance to impress for NSW against Victoria at the SCG this week before heading to Launceston to play for Australia A against England next Wednesday.
"It's going to be a good clash (against Victoria) and everyone's obviously looking forward to do well to put their names up there for the upcoming Ashes selection," Smith said on Tuesday.
"It's obviously two strong sides, they've got a pretty good bowling line-up as well with the likes of Sids (Peter Siddle) and (Clint) McKay and (John) Hastings coming back, so it's going to be a good challenge."
"Nathan's been touted as the No.1 spinner at the moment and he's been bowling really well I think."
"It's just I guess for me in these next couple of games to come out there and do the best I can with both bat and ball and keep staking my claims that way."
"I've just sort of taken one step off my run-up which has kept me quite slow at the crease and gives me a lot better shape on the ball, so it's working really well at the moment and hopefully I'll be able to trial it out here a little bit in these games."
"I was lucky enough that in India Punter (Ricky Ponting) wanted to face a few from the other end so there was a bit of footmarks, so I had to take one less step because the net was blocking me," he explained.
