Australia back-up wicketkeeper Tim Paine has broken a finger in his right hand during the All-Stars Twenty20 game in Brisbane on Sunday night.
Paine incurred the injury while batting when he was struck on the hand by a Dirk Nannes delivery which caused him to retire hurt without facing another ball.
The 25-year-old was wearing a microphone for Channel 9, and told the television audience that his right hand felt 'seriously no good'.
Paine was sent to hospital and x-rays revealed what was described as "a clean crack" in the finger, although it was not clear on Sunday night how long he would be out of action.
Paine firmly established himself as the second in line to Brad Haddin this year, playing four Tests in England and India while Haddin was injured. Paine performed well in his first Tests, collecting 17 dismissals and averaging 35.87 with the bat.
He was taken to hospital after leaving the field to assess the extent of the damage, in what could be a body blow for the Australian side just days out from the start of the Ashes series.
While the Tasmanian has not been selected in the 13-man squad to face England in the first Test starting Thursday, the Australian selectors could be stuck with a selection dilemma should first-choice keeper Brad Haddin injure himself in the series.
