Western Australia 205 & 0 for 51 need 314 runs to beat New South Wales 291 & 278 (Smith 70, Khawaja 55, Duffield 6-77)
Western Australia require a further 314 runs for victory over New South Wales after the visitors set them a testing 365 at the WACA. Half-centuries to Steven Smith and Usman Khawaja helped the Blues to 278 in their second innings, but they suffered regular setbacks from Ryan Duffield.
Smith top-scored for the Blues in their second innings with 70 but he said that innings left him unsatisfied as he tries to work his way into the Australian team.
"It was a little bit disappointing, I didn't hit as many balls as I would've liked in the middle, but 70 is better than nothing," he said.
"I was a bit disappointed I didn't go out and get a big one, but those things happen."
"Everything's coming together pretty well with bat and ball though, so tomorrow hopefully I can get a few wickets and keep putting my name up there."
Smith has averaged 68.13 from his last eight Shield innings, dating back to last season, which has led to calls for him to replace one of the under-pressure Test incumbents.
"For me, it's about taking each game as it comes. It's great to be spoken about, but if I play my best cricket I'll put my own name up there," Smith said.
