Australia 245 and 4 for 238 (Clarke 80, Watson 57) trail England 5 for 620 dec (Pietersen 227, Cook 148, Trott 78, Bell 68*) by 137 runs
England declared today with a first innings lead of 375 runs over Australia in the second Test in Adelaide.
The tourists continued their innings into the fourth day at Adelaide Oval, declaring at 5-620, their fifth highest Test score against Australia.
Australia's batsmen, who could muster only 245 in their first innings, face the prospect of playing for a draw on a wearing pitch taking increasing amounts of spin.
Rain washed out the final session of play yesterday and a shower or two are forecast for today, but day four began under a blue sky.
Australia will resume at four for 238, still 137 runs behind England, with Mike Hussey not out 44 to be joined by Marcus North who has yet to face a ball.
Australia must try to survive 98 overs on a wearing and spinning pitch.
Earlier, Mike Hussey said Australia could not rely on rain to escape with a draw.
"A little bit of rain would help, that is for sure," Hussey said.
"But I don't think we can really look at the weather too much, we have just got to concentrate on batting as much time as we can."
Michael Clarke fought hard for 80 but his dismissal on the last ball of the day left Australia in some trouble
