“Simon Katich has struggled through the second Test match with an achilles tendon injury that became increasingly painful during the fielding innings,' Kountouris said.
“Achilles tendinopathy can be a complex injury and based on Simon’s current symptoms and results of a scan undertaken last night, it is unlikely that he will be available to play any further part in this Vodafone Ashes Series.
Hughes in line to open batting
SIMON Katich has vowed to fight his way back into the Australian Test team after suffering a career-threatening injury.
The opener has been ruled out for the remainder of the Ashes due to a torn tendon in his Achilles and, at 35, realises it will be a tough road back, with selectors poised to name long-time understudy Phillip Hughes as his successor. Should Hughes perform well in the remaining three Tests, Katich's final Test may have been played yesterday.
''Obviously my age will be a factor, but I haven't looked at it like that in the last few years because the last 2½ years of my career have been my best,'' he said.
Australian skipper Ricky Ponting indicated Hughes would be thrown in to face the English attack on a bouncy Perth pitch.
''He's probably the first cab off the rank that selectors will be talking about. I'll be surprised if he didn't come in,'' he said.
Katich has previously resurrected his Test career after being dropped and plans to do so once more.
''Three years ago I was told I wasn't going to play again,'' he said.
''I haven't spoken to selectors. I don't know what their thoughts are. All I know is that I'll do everything I can to get it right. I'm confident I will get it right.''
