Ponting believes Johnson spell could set up series

THE repercussions of Mitchell Johnson's devastating return to form will be felt throughout the rest of the Ashes series, Ricky Ponting believes.

Of all the things the captain could be happy about yesterday - his birthday and Australia emphatically levelling the series - he seemed to be most chuffed about Johnson's nine-wicket haul.

''Mitch's spell was unbelievable, probably one of the all-time great Ashes spells,'' Ponting said. ''And to have that happen when it did, and have him coming into the game under a bit of pressure as well, was an amazing achievement from him and brilliant for the team.

''It's set up this victory and no doubt now set up the series for us.

''Some of the deliveries that he bowled that got their batsmen out will now have them thinking seriously about the way that they play him,'' he said.

''I heard some whispers coming into the game that they had Mitch's type of bowling worked out and they knew how they were going to play him. I'm not sure if they're saying that now.''

''Most importantly from him but from the guys that look after our bowlers and our physical preparation for each game as well, they've worked exceptionally hard and it's had a great result on a Test match and I think the series for us.''

National selector Greg Chappell said Ponting himself deserved credit for his confidence to push for Johnson's recall so soon after his omission.

''Obviously there's a lot of satisfaction seeing the boys bounce back as they did.''
