Scouting Report – 09-10 Big Bash....

If you win the toss, bat first. That seems to be the path to Big Bash success. The tournament is dominated by the team batting first with 71% of matches in 2009-10 won by the team making first use of the pitch.

This is especially true in in Hobart and Perth. In five matches last year, the team batting first won each time.

WA and Tas don’t chase well however. They failed to win a match from six attempts batting second in 09-10.

On the other hand, WA had a perfect record when batting first
Tim Paine (Tas) was the tournament’s premier boundary hitter (28 – 8 sixes, 20 fours), but…

David Warner (NSW) cleared the fence more than any other player (14) and had the best strike rate among players with more than 50 runs.

However neither player could match the single innings efforts of WA’s Shaun Marsh (108) – only century-maker – and Vic’s Aaron Finch (191) – the tournament’s leading scorer.

Spinners ruled in 09-10, with the top five most economical bowlers all tweakers. The first quick on the list was Dirk Nannes (sixth).

Speaking of Nannes, he and Mark Cleary (SA) bowled the only maiden overs in 2009-10, both in the same game; SA v Vic at the Adelaide Oval.

Champions League Twenty20....

The Champions League Twenty20 (CLT20) is domestic cricket’s grandest stage, the place where the world’s elite meet to decide the best of the best. Offering cricket’s richest domestic purse, US$2.5 million for the winners and US$12 million in total prize money, it’s the game’s most-sought after ticket.

Each tournament contains an exclusive roll call of teams and Australia’s representatives have excelled against the rest of the world in the past two years.

Only the top two teams from the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash receive invitations and in CLT20’s inaugural edition in 2009 and sequel in 2010, Australian teams have set the standard.

The tournament provides an intriguing backdrop, and adds another level of drama, to the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash. Success at home guarantees a chance to win riches abroad.

Australia’s CLT20 efforts....

2009 New South Wales (winner), Victoria (semi-finalist)
2010 Victoria (group stage), South Australia (semi-finalist)
