Wicket-keeper Brad Haddin has backed captain Ricky Ponting to play in the Boxing Day Ashes Test at the MCG.

Ponting, who fractured his finger in the 267-run third Test win over the Poms in Perth, showed little discomfort as he enjoyed a light training session three days out from the Test.

Haddin said the skipper had come through the session with flying colours and would enjoy his first bat since suffering the injury at Australia's net session on Thursday.

"At this stage the finger's recovering well and the signs are all good," Haddin said.

"He had a field and things pulled up well, he's going to have a bat tomorrow and hopefully that all goes to plan."

"He's our leader and we get a lot of inspiration from him, you just have to see the turnaround we had from Adelaide to Perth to see the effect he has on the cricket team, so it's very important he plays."

"He's (Beer) obviously a quality spinner and the little time I've seen him, you can see he likes the contest and is a competitive bowler. He's fitted into our group very well and if he gets the opportunity to debut, he'll do himself and Australia proud."

One thing the 30-Test veteran is excited about is the opportunity to play in front of what is expected to be a world record Test crowd of close to 100,000 on day one.

"There's no bigger stage – it's a massive test match to be at the MCG on Boxing Day, we're very excited about that prospect," he said.
