Callum loses fitness race to face Blues in opener

CALLUM FERGUSON has suffered another injury setback but this time it has nothing to do with his knee. Before South Australia's Big Bash clash with NSW, Ferguson received a blow to his groin while playing a game of backyard cricket on Christmas Eve, forcing the talented batsmen to miss tonight's match at Adelaide Oval.

He trained yesterday but was deemed unfit to play. The injury follows Ferguson's knee reconstruction in 2009, which forced the 26-year-old to miss almost a year of cricket.

While Ferguson will be missing, South Australia does enter the Big Bash armed with two imports.

''Obviously it would have been nice to get an overseas player for the Big Bash,'' NSW coach Matthew Mott said. ''We tried three or four different guys and thought we got over the line. For different reasons, we couldn't get them. One thing we spoke about at the camp was if we couldn't get someone who was world class we're going to back our own. Hopefully we've got the talent here to do it.''

NSW enter the Big Bash in good form. The Blues opened up a 10-point lead on the Sheffield Shield ladder over the Christmas period and are third in the one-day competition.

''Its been great,'' Mott said. ''Normally we've gone through that and we've been struggling. You don't mind playing cricket when you're actually winning games.''

''We've got a good, young bunch as we always have,'' Hauritz said. ''The belief is definitely there. We just need to string a few performances together.''

Debutant Tim Armstrong, 20, has been named in the NSW squad after impressing in the Futures League Twenty20 carnival in Melbourne, while Shaun Tait will tonight make his return to competitive cricket following elbow surgery.

January 9: v Western Australia at ANZ Stadium
