Henriques puts Blues on top at SCG

New South Wales v South Australia, Sheffield Shield, Sydney, 1st day

New South Wales 3 for 79 trail South Australia 188 (Klinger 59, Cooper 57, Henriques 4-13, Smith 4-57) by 109 runs

NSW is in a commanding position after a dominant opening day of the Sheffield Shield match against South Australia at the SCG on Tuesday.

The Blues were 3-79 at stumps, trailing by 109 runs after the Redbacks lost 7-21 in the middle of their innings before being bowled out for just 188 earlier in the day.

In a worrying sign for Australian fans, Phil Hughes - the man expected to take injured opener Simon Katich's Test spot in Perth next week - was dismissed for just four early in the Blues' innings.

Earlier, debutant Tom Moffat's maiden first class innings ended when he was bowled by a Mark Cameron (1-18) yorker in just the second over for a duck.

Klinger and Tom Cooper appeared to steady the ship, guiding the Redbacks past lunch in a 97-run stand for the second wicket.

The partnership came to an end when Cooper (57) slashed a Trent Copeland (1-31) delivery straight to Nic Maddinson at point, though at 2-101 there was little indication of the carnage to come.
