Maddison hits record-breaking century

With centuries to Nic Maddinson and Usman Khawaja, New South Wales were in a strong position against South Australia after the opening day of the Sheffield Shield match at Adelaide Oval.

Opening batsman Nic Maddinson has claimed a 95-year-old cricketing record, becoming the youngest ever to smash a century for New South Wales on debut.

Aged 18 years and 294 days, Maddinson is younger by almost a month than Callaway was when he hit 207 against Queensland at the Sydney Cricket Ground in 1915.

Maddinson is also younger than the great Arthur Morris, who hit 148 on debut for NSW in 1940.

Maddison belted 17 boundaries and two sixes in his three-hour batting performance that left the Blues in a strong position at 3-366 at stumps.
Usman Khawaja was unbeaten on 175, his highest first-class score,

Khawaja's opening century of the 2010-11 season and the sixth of his career followed his break-out season last summer when he hit 698 runs in seven matches at an average of 63.

New South Wales 3 for 366 (Khawaja 175*, Maddinson 113) v South Australia

Some rain has been forecast for late on Tuesday and early Wednesday, which could impact on the chances of an outright result.
