The selectors gathered at the SCG for the Sheffield Shield match between NSW and Victoria yesterday, but had few positives to discuss.
After he had gingerly taken his seat on a step yesterday, Clarke did his best to alleviate concerns about the back problem plaguing him.
"I pulled up a little bit stiff after fielding on day one. The ground is a little bit sandy, so it's hard on your legs and stuff like that. And then batting, I pulled up a little bit stiff again today. We thought, obviously with what's coming up, we're better off doing all the right things," he said.
Down in Hobart, in the Shield match between Tasmania and Queensland, captain Ricky Ponting failed for the second time, making just five runs.
About the only encouraging performance yesterday came from Queensland paceman Ryan Harris, who took nine wickets, and now looks certain to be named in Monday's squad.
"If circumstances warrant it and there are concerns, we can name more than (the usual 12 players)," a Cricket Australia spokesman said yesterday.
The pressure on the selectors to make generational change continues to mount.
Former Australian batsman Mark Waugh says they must dump Hauritz and Mike Hussey for the Gabba Test.
"Hussey is a very good player, but he looks to occupy the crease at the moment rather than score runs," Waugh said.
