Hussey, Haddin forge base for Ashes glory

AUSTRALIA will desperately pursue victory in the first Ashes Test today with memories still fresh of recent blunders that have cost them wins when opponents have been reeling.

England trail by 202 runs after Mike Hussey and Brad Haddin compiled one of the finest partnerships ever seen, a monster stand of 307 which broke several records, but the hosts have been in such dominant positions before - the first Ashes Test in Cardiff last year and the first Test against India last month - and are determined to finish off the wounded Poms.

''That's definitely a big challenge for our team, we've been in some fantastic positions in the last year or so and … we've got to try to finish the job,'' said Hussey, who blasted a career-best 195 runs.
The partnership between Hussey and Haddin (136) was a record at The Gabba, surpassing the mark of 276 set by Sir Don Bradman and Lindsay Hassett in 1946.

The third was a day of many milestones, which also included:

❏ Hussey's highest Test score of 195;

❏ Haddin scoring a century in the opening Ashes Test for the second consecutive series; and

❏ English paceman Steve Finn taking a five-wicket haul in his debut Australian Test.
