Langer tips batsmen to fire

Australian batting coach Justin Langer has come out firing in support of his top-order, rubbishing suggestions that the in-form English would take an advantage into the first Test.

Langer, appointed to the role in November last year, has had a tough task through the first 12-months of his tenure, as senior players such as Michael Hussey and Marcus North have struggled for form.

"This series is so even. If you look at the top seven batsmen in Australia, they've played more Test matches, they've made more Test match runs, they've got a better overall average, they've scored more first-class hundreds," he said.

"On paper, (Australia) has got a very strong and experienced batting side."

"With the experience they've got, as long as they clear their minds and aren't distracted by the hype and expectation and opinion, I think they're going to have a great summer."

History would suggest the Australians, who haven’t lost since 1988 when the all-mighty West Indians came to town, should be red-hot favourites, but the English are riding a wave of success and all-round improvement.

Aggressive Australian quick Mitchell Johnson wasn’t short on self-belief when talking to media at the Gabba on Tuesday morning, and he said the pressure was on England to show they could match the hype.

"We talk about all this pressure on us, but I think there’s a lot of pressure on them, coming over here being beaten 5-0 last time and obviously holding the urn."

"I think there’s a lot of pressure on them to perform and a lot of eyes on them," he said.
