Mark Taylor throws support behind Mike Hussey, says one-day performances will provide confidence

While Hussey, 35, has been under increasing pressure to hold his Test place, he made a workman-like 71 not out from 91 balls in Australia's modest 8-239 from 50 overs during the opening one-day match of the season, against Sri Lanka at the MCG.

He survived a second-ball stumping chance and was forced to face a hat-trick ball as Australia ruined a good start by losing 3-3. It vindicated Hussey's decision to reject an offer by the selectors to play in the three-day tour match for Western Australia against England, beginning at the WACA Ground on Friday, after scoring just 0 and 3 in a recent Shield match.
"It's all about making runs. It's a self-confidence thing," Taylor said on Wednesday.

Hussey has managed to average better than 35 in just three of his last 11 Test series but has done it in seven of his last 11 one-day series and will no doubt do it again in this three-match series after such a good start.

"That means there's no problems with the eyes or the feet, he's still got the ability there. It's just a matter of getting the confidence back when he plays in the Test matches."

"I think Australia would be wrong if they didn't pick Mike Hussey," said Arthur. "He has a wealth of experience. You need your experienced players in a Test match against England and the first Test match of a series, it's really important."
