Sony Foundation Australia today announced that The Ponting Foundation and Vodafone have joined forces to support its major fundraising initiative – ‘You Can’ – throughout the 2010 / 2011 Vodafone Ashes series.
The Ponting and Sony Foundations will reach out to cricket-goers during the Vodafone Ashes Series by urging all supporters attending the Ashes to donate used mobile phones to ‘You Can’, which aims to raise $15 million through a mobile phone recycling program to build specialised youth cancer wards across the country.
Through support from Cricket Australia’s Cricket Cares program, specially-branded Ricky Ponting and Vodafone ‘You Can’ mobile phone collection bins will be positioned at each of the Ashes Tests in Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne and Sydney.
Sophie Ryan, CEO, Sony Foundation Australia, commented: “The Vodafone Ashes Series is an exciting next step in Sony Foundation’s mission to raise $15 million to help improve the survival outcomes for young people aged 15 to 30 who are living with cancer. With Vodafone’s support, combined with the backing of Ashes fans and thanks to the passionate work of The Ponting Foundation, we’re set to build on the 228,000 phones already donated through ‘You Can’.”
The You Can campaign
With cancer the leading cause of disease-related death amongst Australia’s teenagers, there is an obvious and urgent need for action. A unique collaboration between governments, not-for-profit organisations, corporate and community support is helping to create a better future for young Australians with cancer. Sony Foundation is proud to play its role in this life saving initiative, by raising $15 million over three years in conjunction with long time charity partner CanTeen.
It’s simple for the public to get involved without donating a single dollar. There are over 20 million old mobile phones lying in bottom drawers across the country – the You Can campaign calls on all Australians to donate these. Sony Foundation has partnered with an international reuse and recycling company to swap old mobile phones for cash. Funds raised will be used to build youth cancer wards across Australia. All donated phones will be refurbished and reused or recycled. In the first five months of the campaign over 228,000 phones have been donated to the campaign.
The You Can appeal is supported by Free Post mobile phone donation envelopes inserted in national newspapers and magazines. Unwanted mobile phones can also be donated at a variety of retail partners Australia-wide including: Sony Centre, Harvey Norman, Best & Less, Retravision, Leading Edge Computers and now Vodafone and 3 stores.
