Celebrating 40 years of ODIs

Cricket Australia (CA) will mark 40 years of one-day international cricket this season, with fans encouraged to join the celebrations.

CA will celebrate the anniversary with a new marketing campaign to promote the Commonwealth Bank Series – ‘Classic As’.

The campaign will pay homage to the great moments of ODI cricket, include a select number of tickets to matches priced at $19.71 (the year of the first ODI) and will reward fans who dress in 1970s gear at matches.

The first one-day international was played between Australia and England at the MCG on 5 January 1971.

CA will mark this special milestone with a number of events, including a cocktail reception with members of Australia’s first ODI team at Victoria’s Government House, during Melbourne’s Cricket Weekend – which also includes a KFC Twenty20 International – from 14-16 January.

“In more recent times, I’ve been privileged to see two of Australian ODI cricket’s greatest performances – Ricky Ponting’s brilliant 140 not out in the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup Final and then Adam Gilchrist’s similarly breathtaking innings in the corresponding match in the 2007 tournament.

“I look forward to reliving many more memorable performances and moments throughout the Commonwealth Bank Series, starting at Melbourne’s Cricket Weekend.”
