"I'm ready to go. I've always enjoyed opening the batting. I've always done it, it's exciting and gets the blood flowing," Hughes said, rolling his eyes at the England suggestion that he has a weakness to short-pitched bowling.
"I'm sure England's bowlers are going to come out firing against me. But I'm ready for it.
"I'm ready for anything they throw at me. I just cannot wait.
When Hughes made his Test debut, the Star Hotel in his home town of Macksville offered free beer for the duration of his first Test innings.
"We'll have the game on and his extended family will be up here watching every ball.
Hughes's Test debut at Johannesburg lasted four balls and one minute. "Didn't last long last time, did it?" he laughed yesterday. "The support from Macksville has always been fantastic. All the messages I've got lately, all the calls from close mates back home, it's been sensational."
Hughes knows what is coming. Short balls. He rolls his eyes every time it's mentioned as his weakness.
