Shane Watson says losing the Ashes feels "horrendous"

SHANE Watson insists the enormity of losing the Ashes on Australian soil for the first time in 24 years has not been lost on him and his teammates.
Clearly affected about the scenes that await at the MCG on day four, the  Australian all-rounder admitted the prospect of winning the urn was gone.

There was no need for faint optimism.

He knows days for Australian cricket do not come any blacker than this.

"Its horrendous, to be totally honest," Watson said.

"Going into this Ashes series we knew how important it would be to win them because Australia hasn't lost them here in 24 years. We knew if we didn't win it was going to be disappointing for us personally to be involved in that type of history, and disappointing for the fans as well."

Pressed on how the series loss would affect the public's confidence in the side, Watson admitted a backlash was likely.

"The Australian fans have come out and supported us and we haven't given them anything to support," he said.

"We really do have to go out there in Sydney and try to keep some of our supporters and fans on-side. The way we've played, we might have turned a few people off. We're going to have to restore that."

"Its very shattering to be in the position we are now after playing so well in Perth and feeling like were a big chance of winning the Ashes," Watson said.

"We havent been in a great place over the last couple of days because we havent been in a great place from day one. I dont think the mood was much different (after day three)."

"There's no doubt we don't want to continue playing the way we have. It's extremely disappointing and you don't want to play in losing sides. We definitely have to find ways to turn it around because it's not great."
