Starc had been hoping to return to first-grade cricket this weekend after playing last week as a specialist batsman in the seconds but aborted his comeback on Tuesday after feeling pain in his side while bowling in the nets.
''The time got the better of us having a bowl the other day, and it's still not quite right, so I'm just going to have to push it back a couple of weeks and try again after Christmas some time,'' Starc said.
Starc broke down five weeks ago during a Shield game against Victoria, just days after claiming a career-best, four-wicket haul in a one-dayer against Sri Lanka in Brisbane.
who play their first Twenty20 game against South Australia in Adelaide on January 4 - are likely to err on the side of caution with the impressive 20-year-old.
With Sydney grade cricket having a three-week break for Christmas after this weekend, Starc will have to wait until January 8 to get some overs under his belt and prove his fitness to NSW selectors.
Starc has been picked in the PM's XI to face England in a limited-overs game in Canberra on January 10.
The opening four matches of the seven-game series against England, starting on January 16, will be the final chance for players to push their World Cup claims before a final 15-man squad is named on the 27th.
''The goal at the moment is just to be back bowling,'' Starc said.
''I've got to get out in the nets and put it on myself to do the hard work.''
