IT IS ''perhaps the ultimate backyard bat'', says sports memorabilia expert Tom Thompson of the bat Sir Donald Bradman used for playing backyard cricket at his Adelaide home.
Not only was it wielded by the world's greatest batsman, it was also used by Keith Miller, Lindsay Hassett and other Invincibles when they were invited over to the house at No. 2 Holden Street, Kensington, for a light afternoon tea after each Adelaide Test match.
But with the bat expected to fetch $15,000 to $20,000 when it is sold by Aalders Auctions in Erskineville on Sunday, it is unlikely its new owner will allow it to be used for any more backyard cricket.
He visited Bradman at Holden Street more than 30 times.
Also up for auction on Sunday, and expected to fetch $20,000 to $30,000 is a Sykes Don Bradman bat used by Bradman during the 1930 Ashes tour of England and signed ''Don Bradman/Private'' on the reverse, with signatures of the Australian and English players on the front.
The Aalders catalogue says: ''This bat shows extensive match use by Bradman prior to the third Test at Leeds in July, where he scored 334.''
